The Women in Public Works Network identified succession planning as the most critical priority for the coming year, recognizing that public works agencies across the county are facing accelerating retirements, along with shifting workforce expectations. To remain strong and resilient, agencies must prepare the next generation of women leaders, and the network is uniquely positioned to support that effort. To advance that priority, a 12-month succession skills micro-workshop series has been designed to build competencies that agencies struggle to develop internally. These short, focused sessions strengthen essential leadership, communication, and technical and career-readiness skills that directly contribute to a more prepared and promotable workforce.
An equally important benefit of the series is the opportunity it creates for women who excel in these areas to share their expertise. Many members have expressed that mentoring and peer support were vital to their growth in public works, and these workshops provide a structured platform for women to guide and elevate one another. This will be a peer-led approach designed to strengthen individual confidence and visibility but also reinforce a culture of mentorship that is essential for long-term succession planning.
